Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have revealed the new royal baby boy’s name to be Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. Ironically, the literal translation of the young Master’s first and middle names is “Bold Prince, Son of Harry.” Not particularly creative choices, but also not names steeped in rich royal tradition.
Meghan and Harry first introduced Master Archie to the world on May 8, 2019, two days after he was born. Being the first-born son of a duke, Archie could have assumed the title Earl of Dumbarton. However, the proud parents, wishing to normalize his life as much as possible, have decided that he be known simply as Master Archie. Nevertheless, the Queen may still bestow the title of “prince” upon the royal baby as she has with Prince William and Kate Middleton’s children.
The royal couple’s choice of baby name Archie came as a bit of surprise. The British bookmakers’ favorites were Albert, Alexander, and Arthur, or possibly Philip after his great-grandfather. However, Archie, which is the more familiar form of Archibald, is common in England were it was ranked the 18th most popular boy’s name in 2017. His middle name, Harrison, was 34th.
Genealogy website Ancestry expects the name Archie to become even more popular as royal baby names have had such an effect in the past. Prince William and his wife Kate named their children George and Charlotte which caused those names to jump significantly in popularity, especially in the United Kingdom.
Archie is the less formal form of Archibald, an old name of Spanish origin that means “truly brave.” The name was introduced to England in the 1100s and eventually became quite popular in Scotland. The movie star Cary Grant was born Archibald Alexander Leach.
Harrison, an early English boy’s name, quite literally means “son of Harry.” Modernly made popular by the actor Harrison Ford, it was the 115th most popular name in the United States in 2018.
Archie is not the first British royal offspring to receive a nontraditional royal baby name. Queen Elizabeth’s first granddaughter was named Zara Phillips by her mother Princess Anne in 1981.
